Got Mercury? isnt fighting for humanity. It isnt even fighting against mercury pollution. It is a front organization for the Turtle Island Restoration Network (TIRN) that seeks to marshal political pressure to achieve its narrow ends: protecting turtles. Rather than use science to persuade and inform, TIRN has shown itself willing to spread misinformation about mercury and tuna if it will advance their cause. In 2001, Todd Steiner, said, "We don't need to know anything more about [endangered species] to save them, we just need to make the hard political decisions. And those decisions aren't made by biologists . . . I was looking for a way to mesh my biology training and activism together."
