In 2009, Greenpeace lashed out at the United States House of Representatives for passing what it called weakened' legislation that aimed to reduce carbon emissions. The bill was the first ever passed by Congress designed to cut carbon emissions. While the democratic leadership compromised in order to pass the legislation, Greenpeace urged lawmakers to vote against the bill.

What They're Not Telling You

While Greenpeace demands institutional change, it apparently has a tough time leading by example. According to the organization's Annual Environmental Report, it fell short of meeting its own target of reducing carbon admissions for business travel in 2007.

Meanwhile Greenpeace has announced plans to ad a new $50 million ship to its feet. While the new flagship will be powered by the latest in "green technology" it is not certain just how much the craft, complete with a helicopter landing pad and room for a crew of 32, will ad to Greenpeace's own carbon footprint on the high seas.

Greenpeace emitted 6325.4 tons of CO2 in 2007 from its fleet of ocean-going vessels alone- based on its own calculations such emissions for just one year are equal to almost a century's worth of emissions use to power Greenpeace's offices worlds wide. Keep in mind these vessels are used for donation generating campaigns like calling on countries to Quit Coal.'

The Tough Questions:
Has a culture of hypocrisy been allowed to develop unchecked within Greenpeace to the point where the organization can campaign against the impact of carbon emissions on the ocean, while its own public relations campaigns contribute generously to the problem itself?
