Summary: Nearly a third of babies born in India are low birth weight (LBW). Researchers followed 676 women there to explore if low seafood consumption is a risk factor for LBW. Women who did not eat fish during the third trimester had a significantly higher risk of LBW. One possible reason for this is the omega-3s fatty acids in fish may speed up how fast a baby grows by increasing blood flow to the placenta.
