No fun in the sun

It’s been rainy and windy for about a week now on Oahu, so there was no fun in the sun over the weekend. But there was still fun. Yesterday after a girls’ trip to the brand
new Target (I’m fully stocked on inexpensive beachwear, for whenever the sun
does return), I joined Lloyd on a drive up to the North Shore
to indulge his fascination with wave watching.
It was chilly and sprinkling, but we stayed on the beach as long as we
could, observing surfer after surfer brave the 30+ foot swells.

On the way home we stopped at Turtle Bay Resort for an appetizer
at highly-rated Ola. Splitting an appetizer is our new way to
experience the ambiance of amazing restaurants while saving money and calories. We got Ahi poke with sea
asparagus
, a crunchy and salty vegetable I’d never seen outside of Hawaii. It’s grown on platforms atop shrimp ponds on
Oahu, and is starting to be exported to Canada
and Japan. Hopefully it’ll make its way to the mainland,
because it’s a nutrient-rich complement to fish and shellfish salads and stir-fries.
