Ralph’s Grocery and Parent Company Charged for Overbilling Customers
The Los Angeles City Attorneys Criminal Branch filed a multi-count criminal case against Ralphs Grocery Company, and its parent corporation the Kroger Company, after undercover inspections at 14 grocery stores across the City discovered customers were being overcharged for prepackaged and weighed products. Fifty-nine counts of violations were filed, including false and misleading advertising, unlawful computation of value, selling prepackaged commodities in less quantity than represented and false labeling. Ralphs and Kroger could face fines and penalty assessments up to $256,000. Products included deli salads, fried chicken, prepared meat items, frozen shrimp, scallops, pacific cod, and king crab. Violations included charging for the weight of the package or including the ice glaze on frozen products in the net weight.
