NFI has established educational and leadership initiatives designed for emerging leaders in the seafood sector.
Through networking opportunities, specialized programming, and distinctive experiences, these initiatives are meticulously designed to enable individuals in the seafood sector, providing them with essential industry insights and fostering a cooperative mindset to enhance decision-making and encourage beneficial changes within the industry.



A hands-on workshop in detecting seafood decomposition led by FDA National Sensory Experts. Attendees learn FDA sensory evaluation methods and criteria for determining quality and spoilage on a range of species and product forms. Ideal for QA professionals, private laboratories, and seafood buyers and sellers.
Educational and networking opportunity for seafood professionals taught by industry experts, government regulators, and fishery academics. The multifaceted curriculum, taking place at the University of Washington’s School of Aquatic and Fishery Sciences (SAFS), covers classroom presentations, product demonstrations and industry field trips. Attendees receive a comprehensive seafood crash course on technical issues, product quality concerns, supply landscape, market dynamics, and hands-on product experience.
An in-depth course on seafood product labeling that educates attendees on building an ingredient statement, deciphering country of origin labeling, and understanding serving sizes for nutrition facts panels. Led by NFI’s technical team, the workshop covers labeling essentials as well as company specific questions. In addition to course instruction, attendees receive a manual that serves as a valuable desk reference afterwards.
