During these tough economic times, the temptation to cut corners can be great. Harvest of the Sea (Ore-Cal Corporation) however is defined by its constant and long-standing commitment to quality, no matter what the economic landscape. The shrimp specialists, as they like to call themselves, have been providing safe, high quality shrimp since 1961.
Harvest of the Sea’s long-standing commitment to quality started almost 30 years ago with the establishment of its quality control department.
Avito Moniz, the Director of Technical Services for Harvest of the Sea, has been with the company for more than 30 years and has had the pleasure of watching the industry evolve over time.
“We want to do everything we can to ensure the safety of the product that we put into the supply chain and give our consumers full confidence to enjoy our products,” said Moniz.
Harvest of the Sea’s decades of experience have allowed it to develop the total quality management system that it uses today. The system monitors the processing of shrimp throughout the entire distribution cycle. The process begins first with overseas pre-qualifications. Some operations start their Quality Control programs when the shrimp enters the plant but Harvest of the Sea takes it a step further, starting at the farm level. The process even includes a system of technicians, who monitor the packers and complete final examinations once the shrimp arrive at the plant.
Harvest of the Sea finds that developing relationships with its suppliers improves safety and quality.
“We understand the culture and partner with them to produce a high quality, safe product. We have a similar vision and share the responsibility for safety. As a community, we must be vigilant about quality and safety to ensure the future sustainability of the industry,” said Moniz.
Recognizing the need for innovative, new products, Harvest of the Sea is answering consumer demands by evolving their signature shrimp safety systems for used on other projects.
