A toast to the Mediterranean Diet

The last two days I've been up in Boston for the 15th
Anniversary Mediterranean Diet Conference.
A variety of presenters mentioned that people have heard of the Mediterranean style of eating, and can maybe identify olive oil as a key component, but
generally have a hard time with the rest of the definition. So I'll start by sharing the Traditional Healthy
Mediterranean Diet Pyramid. As you

Seafood and cancer

Regular seafood consumption is linked with optimal health
from birth to old age, head to toe.
Fetal brain development, heart health, and brain health as we age are all
home runs. But one area the jury is
still out on is the role eating seafood plays in cancer prevention. This week we got two new pieces of the
puzzle.

Picky eaters

Lloyd and I got back late last night from what we called our
"Betrothal Bash" - a joint bachelor/bachelorette party at his parents' ranch in
Texas. It was a melting pot of friends and family old
and new, from near and far. But my
dietitian friends and I were in control of the cooking, so everyone ate
(mostly) healthfully, like it or not.

Pain before Breakfast

This morning I went to "Pain before Breakfast" - a 5-mile
run that the JAGs, and any ambitious significant others, embark on every
Thursday at 5:30am. Not particularly
pleasurable, but now that I'm working remotely, it's become more important than
ever to build regular physical activity in to my day.

It's 8:00am sharp, and I'm listening out my window to
trumpets blasting "The Star-Spangled Banner."
No, this isn't in honor of Election Day - it's a daily tradition at
Naval Station Newport, where I've just moved to be with my fiancé for his JAG
training through mid-December. So there

Truthiness

Today I'm writing from Chicago, where I've been since Friday and will stay through Tuesday for the biggest gathering of registered dietitians there is - the American Dietetic Association Food and Nutrition Conference and Expo (FNCE). For me, FNCE is a busy mix of sharing the latest seafood science with fellow RDs; attending educational sessions to keep up on the latest about other foods; and networking with friends and colleagues, old and new.
